Angel Swim is an 850+ mile solo charity swim attempt from New York to the Canadian border; believed to be the longest charity swim on record. Angel Swim was started in 2002 by 57 year old Fred Brooke (swimmer) and Lynn McCarthy (coach & trainer) as a means to raise money and awareness for children battling cancer. Having reached the Maine/New Hampshire border, Angel Swim 2008 will proceed to Cushing Island north of Portland (see schedule below)
Each summer Fred Brooke swims seven consecutive days, six hours per day (the equivalent of 2.5 marathons per day in energy expended). Accompanied by the Coast Guard auxiliary, police boats and his support team, he stops approximately every half hour for nourishment and medical evaluation.
100% of the money donated to Angel Swim goes to support the Maine Medical Center’s program for children with cancer (MCCP). While the use of the funds is not stipulated, the money goes to directly support the children’s happiness during their hospitalization and most intense periods of treatment.
